What to expect at the Genius Bar repair appointment

Your iPhone has a hardware problem. You need your iPhone repaired and while you’re chatting with an AppleCare advisor, he may determine if your issue requires your iPhone to be seen by an Apple Genius. Likewise, you may be scheduling the Genius Bar appointment yourself in the Apple support app, from a Specialist with an iPad Pro (walk-in and appointment), or upon referral by an AppleCare advisor. You’ll be a little nervous to let your iPhone go, but don’t worry, you can use your extra iPhone (or loaner iPhone in the store) or play around with the Apple products if the repair is same day.

On the day before you go to the Genius Bar, you will get an email or call from your local Apple Store, which it’ll give you a heads up for tomorrow’s appointment and how to prepare your iPhone for the appointment. If you schedule the appointment in the Apple Store, you’ll also get an iMessage stating that your appointment is coming up. You might need to remove your SIM card and put it in your extra iPhone or cellular iPad, if you have any one of those. You must back up your iPhone to iTunes and restore it on your Mac. If you don’t have your own computer, ask a kind neighbor or a friend to borrow their MacBook, or go to your local library. If you can’t use the computer, just back up your iPhone to iCloud and your  Genius can use his MacBook Pro to restore your iPhone.

You are also required to take off any cases, accessories, or screen protectors on the iPhone. If your iPhone is fully charged or at least 95% in battery after 8 pm, you are not allowed to charge your iPhone the night and morning prior to the appointment. If your iPhone battery is under 95%, only charge your iPhone for half the night before, but not in the morning of the appointment. This implies that if your iPhone fasted for this appointment, it’ll reduce the risk of the battery burning itself in flames or explosion during the procedure. Make sure to prepare some documents before your appointment with the Genius Bar. You need to bring your invoice, receipt 🧾 or proof of purchase for a warranty check. If you registered for AppleCare+ when you brought your iPhone, make sure to have the receipt or statement of service along with your iPhone receipt. If you lost your receipt for your iPhone, or you brought it in the Apple Store after 2016, check your email for the receipt. Print it out and bring it along with you. Bringing your own pen is highly recommended for the appointment, as you’ll be signing a consent form for the Genius to repair your iPhone.

On the morning before your Genius Bar appointment, you can’t charge your iPhone that time. You need to take your iPhone, invoice and your pen. When Apple sends you an email or calls you about the upcoming appointment (or notifies you via text), you have to hit the road 1 hour to 30 minutes before the appointment. This helps in case you rummage through traffic, or if there’s any road closures. You should arrive at the Apple Store at least 15 minutes prior to the event. Once you’re at the Apple Store, tell a Specialist with an iPad Pro that you’re here for the Genius Bar appointment. Show her the confirmation email, then the specialist will notify a technical specialist or Apple Genius that you’re here for an iPhone procedure. A few minutes later, a technical specialist or a specialist will call out your name, then direct you to the Genius Bar, or the Genius grove in 2015 and above Apple stores. You will then greet the Genius or if you have to wait, a technical specialist will be in place to talk about your iPhone until the Genius comes. He may also ask you questions about the issue. When the Genius is here, he’ll ask you questions. He will check your iPhone warranty status, examine your iPhone, and open it up to check for internal damage. He may also check for fake or third party parts in your iPhone if you had it previously repaired elsewhere than Apple. Next a flashlight will be flashed onto the iPhone screen to check if it’s third party. All of these results will be inputted into the Genius’ iPad Pro or MacBook Pro, then your iPhone will be connected to the Mac for a diagnostic. Your Genius will tell you the results, how the procedure in the iPhone will go through, and the wait time. He’ll clean your iPhone, and hand you a consent form for you to sign, called the Genius Bar Work Authorization. You may also be required to sign another document if you’re going to get a loaner iPhone. This is called the iPhone loan agreement.

Next, the Genius will operate on your iPhone at the Genius room, next to where the bathrooms are. You can’t go in the room to check on your iPhone, unless you have an Apple badge! But if your iPhone repair is in the same day, you get to stay at the Apple Store and play with the Apple products. You can also try on the Apple Watch, buy iPhone cases, and talk with the Apple Specialists! You won’t need a loaner iPhone for same-day repairs.

For an iPhone procedure taking more days, you’ll need a loaner iPhone, or use your own extra iPhone. You can either explore the Apple Store as long until it closes, or go straight home. Once your iPhone is done from service, you’ll get an email, phone call, or iMessage from the Apple Store to pick up your iPhone.

Lastly, after a few minutes or a few days, your iPhone is done with the procedure. The technical specialist will call out your name then take you to the Genius Bar or grove again. The Genius will hand you the iPhone, and if you had a loaner iPhone, you can decide if you want to return it right now or keep it for the next two weeks. The Genius will discuss with you about how the repair went, and any follow ups or special care needed after the repair. You can now go home.
